Stewart: The Fans Penalty Taker

Stewart: The Fans Penalty Taker

After Matt Gill became the fifth Exeter player to miss from the spot this season, talk began about who should step up next time we are given a spot kick.

Paul Tisdale has always said the player who is fouled should never take the resulting spotkick but that doesn't seem to matter to City's takers who miss whether they've been fouled or not!

Basham, Watson, Logan, Gill and McAllister have all missed from the spot this season.

Here at vitalfootball we started a vote to see who the supporters believe should be given responsibility.

Marcus Stewart came in first position with 29% of the votes. His record this season stands at one out of one after he fired home his penalty against Notts County in January.

In second place comes new signing Alex Russell. Russell has been known to take penalties during his career, including scoring during a shoot-out with Boro in the FA Cup in 2007. He is something of an unknown quality penalty wise but could well be stepping up in the near future.

In third position comes Matt Gill, despite his miss on Tuesday night. He had scored from the spot last weekend and famously kept a cool head in the shoot-out at Oxford in 2007.

That shoot-out also helped make a hero of Steve Tully who received 7% of the votes. There were also calls for Moxey, Harley and even Paul Jones to step up to the plate.

Craig McAllister was desperate to be given the penalty on Saturday and he might well be more persuasive next time. His only penalty attempt was a tame effort at Dagenham which was saved but he rolled in the rebound.
