Sawyer out to end City cup dreams

Former City defender Gary Sawyer will be out to stop The Grecians from progressing further in the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy when the sides meet for their rearranged Southern Section quarter-final next Tuesday.

Sawyer, who is a summer recruit from Plymouth Argyle has been a regular in the Bristol Rovers side this season.

He enjoyed a two year loan spell with Exeter at the beginning of his career and was part of the side that drew 0-0 with Manchester United at Old Trafford back in 2005.

Speaking to thisisexeter.co.uk Sawyer said: 'It's a massive game and it offers us a chance to get closer to Wembley. I've never played there and I'd love the opportunity to do it on a stage like that.'

'This is a good competition because it gives clubs like us the opportunity to get there and the fact this game is against one of my old clubs makes it special for me.'

'I had a really good time when I was with Exeter. I had a good reception when we played there earlier in the season and I've still got friends there.'

'We had a really good run in the FA Cup during the first year I was there and I think it's a club that deserves to do well because they are a really good family club.'

Postponements were a problem for Bristol Rovers last season and adverse weather conditions accounted for Tuesday nights original scheduling of this fixture.

Both sides will be hoping that the pitch is playable for next Tuesdays rearrangement as the busy Christmas period approaches.
