Wheeler Feels Settled For Pre Season
Midfielder David Wheeler has said he feels settled this pre season as he heads into his first full year at St James Park.
Speaking to the Official Site the player explained that he was a lot more comfortable this term, because obviously a year ago he was unemployed and only on trial with us, receiving his registration to play on the eve of the opening day of the season against Bristol Rovers having trialled with us successfully.
'Last season was very different because I was travelling back and forth. I was on trial at Dagenham for a bit as well. And coming from two leagues below, I was quite unsure about myself when I was coming into it and it was quite a big challenge for me. But I'm a lot more relaxed now and it's a lot easier for me to focus on what I'm doing.'
Wheeler goes on to admit that it's the uncertainty and not knowing that is the problem when you are in that position, but knowing exactly where he'll be has meant he's been able to relax and enjoy the summer properly, and he comes back knowing what is expected of him, looking to improve, and importantly in good confidence which always plays its part in football.
Having amde his debut in that Bristol Rovers encounter, Wheeler went on to make a further 38 appearances for the club across all competitions, starting 22 matches, and contributing three goals.
He finishes his interview by explaining that long term targets really aren't worthwhile in football, the only target he feels anybody should set is to be better than your former campaign on a weekly and seasonal basis, and that's what he'll be hoping Exeter achieve in 2014-15 and what he achieves on a personal basis.
